Stuart A. Steinberg
Stu is an Army Vietnam
veteran who served with explosive ordnance disposal teams during his two tours
in Vietnam. He was awarded two Bronze Stars, one with "V" Device for
Heroism; the Purple Heart, two Army Commendation Medals; and the Vietnam Cross
of Gallantry.
He has a Bachelor of Arts from Goddard
College, Plainfield, Vermont a J.D from Franklin Pierce Law Center, Concord,
New Hampshire and an L.L.M. from Georgetown University Law Center, Washington,
D.C.
He is one of the first
members of Vietnam Veterans of America and served on the National Board of
Directors from 1985-1987. From 1983-1989, Stu was involved in the founding of
nine state-funded veterans' outreach centers in Massachusetts and was the
Director of the Greenfield center in 1985-1987. Stu is certified by Vietnam
Veterans of America and the US Department of Veterans Affairs to represent
veterans in VA claims. Assisting veterans
with their claims has been an important part of his life. He is extremely successful in getting claims
approved.
Stu retired in 2003
after thirty years as a public defender and a criminal defense investigator
specializing in capital murder cases. He worked in Michigan and Oregon and
still gets calls to assist with capital cases.
Stu was one of the
founders of Central Oregon Veterans Outreach, Inc. (COVO) and was instrumental
in setting the organization on a firm legal footing. He has worked tirelessly to assist veterans
all over the US and indeed the world in getting the benefits due them.
One of his clients
worked for the UN in Afghanistan in law enforcement and training the Afghan
Border Police. He convinced Stu to join him.
Always ready for adventure Stu signed on. He has been in Afghanistan since the first
week of December. His blog
stuinafghanistan.blogspot.com is (besides being very funny) a glimpse of day to
day life in Kabul.
When not in
Afghanistan lives with his wife Mona, several horses, at least 4 dogs and two
cats in Crooked River Ranch Oregon. Stu
has one son, Jonas lives in Minnesota and attends the University of
Minnesota. The staff, board of directors
and clients of COVO eagerly await his return.
